He gets out of bed, goes to the bathroom, takes a shower, brushes his teeth, gets dressed. He tugs a hand through his hair, trudges downstairs to the kitchen, gets some breakfast. His mother comes in, puts a hand on his shoulder and presses a kiss to his temple and Tommy tries for a smile. His father bustles by, ruffles his hair and tells him good luck at school today and Tommy barely manages to work out a response that sounds normal.
Tommy has to remember how to open his mouth and make his voice work. She looks at him, brows furrowed in worry, clearly unbelieving, but nods anyway. If you feel sick or anything, I'll work something out and come get you. He sits in class and stares at a blackboard with words written on it that he should understand.
He sits in class and tries to listen to lectures that should make sense to him. The girl who sits next to him leans over and asks if he'd been paying attention the last three minutes because she hadn't and Tommy just shakes his head, unable to even vocalize how he'd just been stuck in that heavy grey limbo of not-paying-attention since the bell rung.
Even so, he bumbles his way through the start of their latest project, works through his fog to copy down as many notes as he can, makes himself try and talk to his classmates to get their feedback.
He's relieved when class is over because he gets five peaceful minutes to walk to his next one. He still feels dull, and ghostlike, but it's alright 'cause he's got his music to pull him along. He makes it to the other side of campus without stopping in the middle of a hall and just lying on the ground. He makes it through three more classes without his voice dying in the middle of a sentence. He makes it to the end of the day pretending to be a real person well enough to assuage the concern of his classmates and teachers.
When the final bell rings he starts to pack up. His teacher, mrs. Tillman, a nice young lady with dreads always pulled half up and half down and always wearing a pair of rounded glasses with a colorful chain dangling from them, comes over to him.
Tommy nods, and then realizes he should speak. M' just a bit tired I think. That's why I was so-". He makes a vague exaggerated hand motion, trying to reach for the comedy that is usually just right there under the surface. The joke comes out flat, but Mrs.
Tillman smiles with the perfect blend of concern and amusement that makes him feel ever so slightly better. Tommy turns his lips up and he must do it well enough to put her at ease because she taps at his desk once before walking away. He's got a couple of texts from his mom checking up on him and some from his dad clearly trying to cheer him up with deliberately bad puns about work.
Tommy answers them, unable to even channel his normal excitement through typing. He gets himself a snack, not really hungry- not really much of anything- but knowing that he should. In these years he has been playing on several stages in Rome and some places in Europe like Czech Republic trying to bring his feelings and emotions in a unique melodic techno style.
