Thursday, March 1, AM. Ok, well i've had the same problem too with the black screen sometimes when resuming from sleep closing the lid and i'm sure everybody's tired of hearing about it. I just found this message board today. I called dell last week, spoke to two technitians who both knew nothing bout this black screen and 1 even spoke of replacing the video card.
I haven't tried the ACPI lid driver thing yet. But I also think the video drivers available for vista suck.
Right now the best resolution I can get with the latest driver updates available for my notebook is X And finally when I used to resume from sleep my resolution would be corrupted and after the 1st ficker it would be reduced to something like x I jus did a system restore to the first day i got it and its been good for two weeks now, and hope it stays that way.
I'm jus glad to see i'm not the only one whose experiecing this black screen thing. I really do feel screwed though by dell for paying just under 2g's for a system and having to reboot 2x to get rid of that black screen. Friday, March 9, AM. Sunday, March 11, PM. Hi had the same problem on my Vaio FEB, found a fix on one of the other forums Under device manger, find the "ACPI Lid" driver under "System Devices", right click and select "Update driver software", Select Browse my computer for drivers, but choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
Untick "Show compatible hardware", scroll down to the bottom and select "Volume Manager" as driver, this fixed the problem with the screen not powering on when openeing the lid! I've updated the drivers and they work temporarily and then stop! Any help would be appreciated. So this morning I get a windows update notification. And low and behold, what is in the update? I close the screen, and open it, and whoosh. I switch back to the volume manager and here I am.
I keep going around and around in my head why in the world Microsoft doesn't seem to be devoting any attention to this problem. It seems so simple. I am just glad I don't want to use the ACPI events to put my notebook to sleep or shut down when the lid close event fires. If I did, I would be even more disgusted.
So this issue doesn't really affect me any more. Overall, Vista has impressed me as running very well and being stable, even though NONE of my games work. I've tried about a dozen, and not a single one works. To Vista's credit, I have only tried one since the nvidia update But isn't it the principle of the matter? How much more widespread and serious does an issue need to be to get some priority?

But, when I had the laptop hooked up to an external HDTV I realized that it automatically switches to an external monitor when the lid is closed.
The screen automatically popped up on the HDTV. This happens even if no external monitor is attached. To get the screen back for me I just pushed Function and monitor select button f4 on Compaq vz.
Very annoying. Why don't they fix this. Same problem for me - brand new laptop. All new hardware and software - hibernation seems to freeze computer - I have to run shut down everytime as closing the lid is more of a headache. Sounds strange having a laptop that doesn't behaves like a Tuesday, March 27, PM. I excitedly download the 50 MB monstrosity and start the install. During the download I screenshot my Windows Experience Index Score page, hoping that my lousy video card rating should jump dramatically with the drive update it's 3.
After being greeted with the usual 'getting ready to install' dialog, my computer suddenly reboots without warning. I immediately check the device manager to confirm the installation of the new drivers, since I never got any indication that the driver install completed. Driver date looks good, and my arbitrary Windows Experience Index Score needs updating.
I refresh. My gaming graphics score doesn't change, and my graphics score goes DOWN - from 3. I know, it's futile, but apparently by this point I am quite the glutton for punishment. I change back, reboot, close the lid, and am greeted by my old friend the black screen. Thursday, March 29, AM.

Click Browse my computer for driver software and click Let me pick up a list of device drivers on my computer. Uncheck Show compatible hardware. If this function does not appear after unplug power cable, I suggest you to try to do from my solution again and select another WDDM driver.
But if do not care about utilization of battery or settings which you use to increase performance, you do not find WDDM driver again. Saturday, April 7, PM. Why Volume Manager though? The problem is that I'll shut the lid, expecting it to go to sleep mode, then I'll put the laptop in my bag and it'll keep running on full power inside my bag where it gets pretty hot!
Wednesday, April 11, PM. I have the same problem as all these postings. The computer is a Sony Vaio cant' remember the model number off hand. I went into power options and changed all settings to never turn off monitor or hard drive under any cirumstance. I've noticed now that when running Messenger that it still freezes. Has anyone else seen this as well? Imagine if it's caused by another Microsoft program.

If you only experience the problem when Messenger is running, the problem you are experiencing is likely to be a different one. Have you contacted Sony? If you go to the computer manufacturer's website and download and install graphics driver according to your hardware configurations, it will fix the problem.

I have also the same problem on Amilo Pi notebook, but we may await solution from Microsoft, one of hotfixes included in Service Pack 1 for Vista should adress this issue and they have correctly marked it as driver issue.
Thursday, December 13, PM. Fixed mine also. I only needed to push the power button and it came out of hibernate anyway. Now if someone could figurem out what is causing my screen to refresh at rate so quick that I can't do a shutdown without going nthrough ctrl-brk or type entries into the run selection more than to letters I would be greatfull!!
Wednesday, February 20, AM. I have had the same problem with screen going black with no reason , but it was solved don't know how! The only problem left is that sound of disconnecting device when lid is closed! Moreover I can see from prinscreen that when the lid is closed - no displays are being offered in NVIDIA control panel in multiple displays settings. Another strange thing is that my screensaver is suppose to appear after three minutes of my computer being idle. I know some programs will restrict this, but even when nothing is running, my screensaver never shows I believe this is tied in with the same problem.
Last thing I want to say is that when my computer, and I log into Vista, i receive a random black blink, followed by normal Windows Desktop, etc This never happened before either. Alright, I just found the folder where HP stores all the drivers on your computer, SwSetup, and navigated to the nVidia folder. I reinstalled the software and so far it seems to work, however, the now every time I close my screen, I get that sound that something is being disconnected, and when I open my screen, I get a sound like something is being connected to the computer Well that sound is the USB port device detection.
What do you have connected there? And is it now set to "do nothing" when you close the lid? Well, everything seems to work fine again, however, Vista is telling me to reinstall a nVidia driver again I will ignore it I guess, thanks. Lol, -- glad to hear all's well. Tip Try different settings for On battery and Plugged in , as changing what happens when the laptop lid closes and isn't plugged in dramatically effects the battery life.
